Small Office Design Challenges

All too often, the big guys tend to think that the little guys have it so much easier in today’s business world. A small office has less staff and general “stuff” to deal with, right? Well…maybe. But, when it comes to office design, I’d argue that the small guys have a tough job ahead of them. They have to fit office supplies, furniture, and design elements into relatively small spaces. And, as more stuff is collected, the small office can quickly begin to feel like an overstuffed box. And so the challenge begins.

While I’ve often held myself to rules such as getting rid of one old thing each time I get something new, I quickly learned that strict rules can’t apply to office design. We need what we need in order to function. However, we can certainly make some improvements that will keep our design in tip-top shape.

My first suggestion is to find furniture that doubles as storage space. Desks work best when they include shelves or other features that also store papers and materials (this also helps keep the clutter to a minimum). Additionally, file cabinets are key, but only if they are used effectively. Rather than lining office walls with rows of filing cabinets, invest in those that reach the ceiling. Even if you have to use a step ladder to reach a file, you’ll feel better than you would if those filing cabinets began closing in on you.

So, little guys…use your space effectively and efficiently, and you’ll soon show those big guys who’s boss.

Green Interior Office Design is Easier than you Think

If you think that transforming your office into an environmentally-friendly workspace will take too much time and effort, think again.  Today’s world of interior office design isn’t just focusing on the drive to “go green” just to fit in with the latest tends.  Instead, office design takes a green approach to improve our quality of life at work.  No, this isn’t some fluffy rhetoric designed to support my campaign to save the world.  This is a concept that works.  When we feel better about our work space, we are not only happier at work, but we also are more efficient at work.  And, we take pride in our work, something that is integral to a successful company culture.

In fact, today’s youngest employees view working in a green workplace as a top priority in their job search.  And for good reason.  These youngsters want to be happy at work, and they want to represent a company that fills them with pride.  And, for the company, this is a win-win situation.  When employees are happy and proud, there’s less chance of turnover and more chance of quality work being produced.

See, I told you it wasn’t that hard.

Organize your Office with Personal Storage Towers

Now I have found the one piece of office furniture that I will never again be able to live without.  Check it out: Haworth’s Personal Storage Towers gives a lot of storage space while taking up just a little bit of room in your office.  Talk about space planning!  I can’t believe I ever worked without one of these.

Once I found this storage system, I was able to organize my office efficiently while promoting a contemporary look.  Paper and old files were easy to store in the bottom drawers while reference books now fill the shelves above.  And, what’s best is that I’ve placed the tower right next to my desk, so I only have to turn my chair to pull the book or file I need.  And, of course, I had to add a bit of personal flair, which was easy with the storage tower.  Plenty of room means there’s extra space to show off a vase of my backyard tulips and pictures of my main squeeze.

Is it wrong to be this excited about a piece of office furniture?  I sure hope not.

Is the Roll Top Desk Coming Back?

I can’t say that I’ve walked into too many offices that still sport the antique look of the roll top desk.  While this style may have been popular decades ago, today’s businesses seem to concentrate more on sleek and sophisticated.  In other words, there’s something about the roll top desk that doesn’t exactly fit in the description of contemporary office furniture.

However, it seems that the roll top desk may be making a comeback.  Some offices have found that this style of desk helps keep clutter to a minimum.  And, with our wired workplace, the roll top desk gives workers the ability to keep wires behind the scenes when not in use.  Additionally, roll top desks can fit in to just about any room in the office.  By simply rolling down the top of the desk, the piece of furniture becomes a part of the tasteful decor rather than an open display of clutter.

What do you think?  Are roll top desks on the verge of a major comeback, or should we keep them in the office graveyard?

Interior Decorators without a Hidden Agenda

The process of hiring an interior decorator can often be overwhelming.  You want to choose a reputable company that has both an experienced resume and a passion for the work.  What you don’t want, however, is a design company that waits until halfway through the project to tell you that you need entirely new carpet or a different color scheme.

Be sure your interior decorators are upfront from the beginning in regards to exactly what your office needs and how much it’s going to cost you.  Hidden fees, long waiting periods, and unexpected remodeling ideas should never be mentioned after a project has begun.  Instead, ensure that your interior decorating firm has provided every last detail of the project upfront from the very beginning.

Space Planning Takes a New Look with Monitor Arm

The days of large monitors that fill entire desk surfaces have gone the way of the typewriter in today’s contemporary offices.  And for good reason.  First, large and heavy monitors aren’t ergonomically friendly.  They are hard to move and adjust to each worker’s individual body, therefore causing neck and shoulder pain.  Additionally, the bulkiness of large monitors take up too much space, especially in offices where saving space is a top priority.

Space planning takes on a whole new dimension with Humanscale’s M2 monitor arm.  Reception desks and workstations that utilize this new monitor arm not only free up space, but they also reap the benefits of less screen glare, better ergonomic positioning, and the option of total adjustability.

Stand Apart from the Next Office Space

There are certainly many benefits offered to shared office space.  Buildings that house several different offices attract more client and visitor traffic and often offer additional services that stand-alone buildings cannot.  However, when it comes to designing an office that is housed in a building with several other businesses, the key is to stand apart with contemporary office design.  This will help each office differentiate itself and make more of a lasting impact on clients.

Think about it: if you walk into an office building, chance are you aren’t going to be very impressed with a potential business partner that has the exact same office motif as the office next door.  However, with this knowledge, you can make sure that your clients will be impressed by an office design that is both contemporary and unique.

Make it your office’s goal to stand out from the rest with an impacting statement that shows it is unique!
