Take Office Decorating Ideas Back to Nature

It’s important that our office promotes the right look.  And, while there are several office decorating ideas, using plants as part of your office decor is not only easy, but it’s also smart.

Whether floor plants, desk plants, or hanging plants suit your office best, using plants as part of your office decor brings life to any office setting.  Additionally, employees tend to embrace plants as decorations, as do clients.  Finally, plants are a relatively cheap investment and they don’t go out of style, so you can get a lot of decorating mileage out of a plant.

Interior Decorator Portfolio Carries Weight

When selecting your office interior decorator, it’s important to approach the process as you would a formal interview by researching a prospective company.  Websites are a good place to start this process.

Take a look at a company’s site and try to get a feel for its missions, goals, and (perhaps most importantly) experience.  Many interior design firms will offer online portfolios that showcase projects.  SPACE, the Michigan-based office interior decorator, provides a web-based portfolio on its site so that potential clients can dig into past projects.  These types of online features help you see the kinds of experiences that design firms have, and they can also give you ideas of your own as you’re beginning to formulate plans for your own office design.

Does Office Decor Top Your Priority List?

We all know that office decor is important, but just how much importance do you devote to it?  If office decorating isn’t one of the top priorities on your office “to-do” list, you might be missing the mark.

Not only does the right office decor contribute to the workability and overall look of your office, but it helps your employees function happily.  And, happy workers are productive workers.

So, as you’re creating your list of office projects for the year, reconsider how many other tasks you put above office decorating.

Choose Office Furniture Wisely

When selecting an interior designer for your office, one important question to ask is who the company uses as its preferred office furniture dealer.  You’ll want to know that the furniture selection is coming from a well-respected company that consistently produces contemporary, ergonomic furniture that can carry your company through many years of business.

The Importance of Conference Furniture

Many major business transactions take place in the office’s conference room.  This is not only a place where employees spend a great deal of their meeting time, but it is also the one room that clients see more than any other in your office.  Therefore, you should take great care when choosing your conference furniture.

First and foremost, the chairs you choose must be comfortable.  You certainly don’t want clients and employees doing yoga stretches during a meeting because they are so stiff from your poorly designed chairs.  Additionally, you’ll want the conference table to be both appropriate for meetings and aesthetically pleasing.  Most offices choose a round conference table that allows each member of the meeting the ability to see one another.

Finally, be sure that your decor is appealing.  While clients are mulling over major decisions, you certainly don’t want them staring at an ugly piece of art or worn down wallpaper.  Provide a contemporary image that speaks to the values of your company and exudes professionalism.

“My Cubicle”

This youtube video is a hilarious indication of how many office workers feel about their office cubicles.  They promote a boring work environment that offers little privacy and puts us too close to other employees that we would rather keep at a distance.

While I can’t give you any suggestions to keeping your co-workers at bay, I can certainly recommend that you think of your cubicle less as a box and more as an office.  The very first task in front of you is to convince your boss to get rid of the gray, carpet-like walls and replace them with modular walls that can be decorated with different fabrics or colors.  Once you’re able to get your style in your office, you’ll surely feel better about spending each workday in this space.

Office Lighting Fixtures Should Help, Not Hurt, You!

We’re not all fortunate enough to have windowed offices that shine natural light into our work environment.  So, many offices still rely on the large florescent overhead fixtures to give their employees light.

In my own personal experiences, however, I’ve found florescent to not only be extremely bright, but to cause headaches.  And, a headache is the last thing we want during the work day.

I just read that many of the floors of Microsoft have replaced florescent office lighting fixtures with desk lamps in individual offices.  Since desk lamps might not provide enough light (remember, the goal isn’t to nap during the work day), I’d recommend using multiple desk lamps or add a standing lamp in your office as well.
